Overview
Samyang 12mm f/2.0 NCS CS is a perfect ultra wide angle lens for APS-C mirrorless cameras with Cropped Sensors (CS). it is a high performing lens, especially suited to cameras fitted with a high resolution sensor (above 24MP). Samyang lenses offer great quality optics at affordable price, the new Samyang 12 mm is expected to be one of the best wide-angle prime lenses available in its class.

The Samyang 12 mm offers an equivalent wide angle of 18mm on APS-C sized sensors, 24mm on Micro Four Thirds (MFT) mount. A fast aperture of f/2.0 allows shooting even in lower light conditions. Optical construction of the lens comprises 12 elements divided into 10 groups including one aspherical lens (ASP) and one hybrid aspherical lens (H-ASP). There are also three lenses made of ED glass, offering superb performance. Technologically the Samyang 12mm lens is the most advanced Samyang lens to date.

The Samyang 12mm features Samyangs new nano crystal anti-reflection coating system (NCS). These new coating provides even lower reflection factor than Samyang's UMC coatings. The NCS coating technology offers exacting process to apply anti-reflection coating more evenly on the surface of the lens. Other benefits brought by the nano crystal layer include improved light transmission, increased resistance to reflections resulting in maximum image contrast. This is applied to 2 elements in the 12mm lens.

Samyang 12mm 1:2.0 NCS CS is a great lens for landscape photography, interior and architecture photography or astrophotography where a high quality wide angle is desired. It features a removable lens hood and 67mm filter thread. It is compact and lightweight, weighing around 250g making it a perfect solution for compact mirrorless interchangeable lens camera systems

    An odd lens

Posted by Cheers, Niel Esposito on 9th Jan 2016

I bought this lens only because I was having trouble with my Olympus M.Zuiko 9-18 again, and it always takes a while to come back from the repair shop. Looking at the images, the Olympus is still better, an equal in image quality but a lot easier to use. However the Samyang is still a very good 12mm prime for a much cheaper price than the Olympus 9-18 or the equivalent 12m prime. The Samyang fits very well to my EM5 Mk-2, plug and play, no need to adjust settings. The camera recognizes a non electronic lens and MF comes up with the camera set in aperture priority. The lens feels weighty without being too heavy and balances well on the camera. Most of it is plastic, but I would imagine a higher quality crack free polycarbonate material. In fact the lens looks real nice in black with the sliver metal attachment and the red ring and also the wide 67mm lens front and the beautifully shaped very curved front lens element and lens hood supplied. There are a lot of comments about focusing this lens. The best way is to focus on the object you want to be in best focus by going to F2, then switching to peaking and magnifying aid. Focus the object, cancel magnification and peaking, then set your appropriate aperture size, F8 is the sweet spot, reduce to f11 if you want a greater depth of field or to see very close foreground objects in focus. Take note of where the adjustment sits on the lens, so you will be able to simply focus to that spot for a quick setting. Weirdly that place is 3/4 the space between 1m and the L of infinity. An interesting lens, and fun to use and certainly well worth the asking price
